Ectoin was first described in 1985, following its isolation from halophilic bacteria of the genus Ectothiorhodospira, found in Egyptian salt lakes. Ectoin is highly compatible with human skin, with studies showing it is non-irritating, well tolerated, and suitable for sensitive or compromised skin.
